We are right in the center of Saskatchewan, Canada, just south of the boreal forest.

Our base camp is situated in the middle of the sleepy little hamlet of Crystal Springs ( population less than fifty). From here we are less than one and a half hours on paved roads from the Saskatoon International airport, which will be your point of arrival if coming by air.

Crystal Springs is situated in the west center of our outfitting area, which is approximately 110 miles long (east to west) and forty miles wide.

This area stretches from the prairie- scape of the Saskatchewan River valley (site of the Riel rebellion) all the way east to the boreal forest. Our area encompasses a rich diversity of landscape from open farm fields, to heavily wooded valleys, hills, and forests. Myriad lakes, marshes, ponds and scattered bluffs of trees dot the landscape including the legendary duck producing potholes of Saskatchewan. Several excellent marshes and lakes are situated within fifteen minutes of base camp, including two Ducks Unlimited marsh areas.

Grain farming is the predominant activity here, with a few sizeable cattle ranches, many mixed grain and livestock operations, and some specialty operations such as bison and elk farms. Typical crops grown include barley and peas (which the ducks and geese love) as well as wheat, canola and alfalfa. In addition you may see specialty crops such as canary seed, and even the odd field of caraway and borage. Typical farm size here ranges from a few hundred acres up to several thousand acres, with most farms in the fifteen hundred to twenty five hundred acre size. Individual fields are typically 160 acres. The majority of these fields are generally harvested by mid September, with the left-over standing stubble and remnants of grain providing quality fare for the birds and excellent hunting opportunities for us.

In addition to the many species of ducks and geese; grouse, partridge, whitetail deer and mule deer abound in the area as well as moose, elk and black bear. You may see fur bearing animals such as coyote, fox, beaver, muskrat and mink. Small but elusive populations of timber wolf and even the occasional cougar also exist.
The population of rural residents has been shrinking as farm size grows, with many absentee landowners and increasing numbers of farmers living in one of the small towns in the area. We encompass communities that are of varying heritage. Most residents here are of British, French, Ukrainian, German, or Scandinavian heritage, with a healthy mix of other people of european ancestry as well as First Nations and Metis.

Typically during our fall bird hunting season the weather can vary from dry, warm and sunny with temperatures up to +25 C down to chilly wet weather with mornings that can be a few degrees below freezing.
